If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and at least 18 years old, you can sponsor certain relatives to come to Canada. Your relatives can live, study and work in Canada if they become permanent residents.

You can sponsor your:

  • Spouse/partner
  • Parents
  • Grandparent
  • Dependent Children/Adopted children

If you sponsor a family member to immigrate to Canada, you must provide proof that you can:

  • Meet basic needs—such as food, clothing and shelter—for yourself and your family,
  • Support your relative financially and
  • Make sure your spouse or relative does not need to ask for financial help from the government.

To have a successful application a sponsor must provide proof that they are in a genuine relationship in the case of a spouse or partner, and have the financial means to sponsor their partner.

You must show documentary evidence that your marriage is genuine and not entered solely to get immigration status into Canada. What is shown as proof can be tricky and must be compelling for the immigration officer to approve your application.
